“Hot Peppers” is just one of many examples of censorship in Bulgaria during the socialist years. The book came out the same year as the Prague Spring, whose crackdown the Bulgarian army also took part in. In a lot of the really “spicy” epigrams, it’s easy to spot hints at the ruling elite of the time, including Todor Zhivkov. And in one of Dimovski’s cartoons, Zhivkov’s signature is even drawn as a pig’s tail!
